Is It Safe To Charge Your Phone In The Car? (And Should The Engine Be Running?)

Image
Considering how important your smartphone is in your everyday life, from keeping you connected and helping you stay productive on the go to being a source of entertainment, you'll want to keep it charged at all times. To make that happen, it's essential to charge it at every possible opportunity, including during your commute. Thankfully, you have several options to charge your phone in the car: using your car's USB port , plugging a charger into the cigarette lighter socket, or using a built-in wireless charger. But is it actually safe to charge your phone in the car, and can it affect your car's battery? When you charge your phone in the car with the engine running, the alternator recharges the car's battery by constantly converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. Since the alternator essentially functions as a generator, there is usually enough power to support both the car's electrical components and your smartphone. That said, you sti...

GHome K10PRO Smart Fingerprint Doorknob Review: Unique But Awkward

Image
Describe the image that pops into your head when I say "smart lock." It's likely a smart deadbolt like the Yale Assure Lock 2 , 's current pick for the best smart lock . Or maybe a retrofit model like the August Wi-Fi ? Regardless, there's a good chance you weren't thinking of a doorknob. Because smart doorknobs can be used in many cases where a deadbolt cannot, I wondered why they seem so much rarer. Ultimately, I believe that a smart doorknob is a little too niche compared to general demand for a front door lock. But I wanted to find out more. That's why I installed a (rather cheap) GHome smart doorknob that still comes with all the bells and whistles: mobile app, touchscreen keypad, fingerprint sensor and a physical bypass key. Here's how it holds up, where it falls short and why smart deadbolts still have their advantages. Getting to know the GHome Smart K10PRO I've seen a few smart lever locks from companies...

Elton John, Dua Lipa Urge UK to Rethink AI Copyright Plans

Image
() -- Top UK artists, including Paul McCartney, Elton John and Dua Lipa, urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to strengthen copyright protections ahead of a critical vote on rules governing artificial intelligence next week. Kate Bush, Ian McKellen and Simon Rattle are also among more than 400 signatories of an open letter that says proposed legislative changes leave creators vulnerable to “years of copyright theft.” “We will lose an immense growth opportunity if we give our work away at the behest of a handful of powerful overseas tech companies and with it our future income,” they wrote in the letter published on Saturday. It comes as members of the House of Lords prepare to vote Monday on an amendment to the data bill that seeks to require companies to tell copyright owners that their work has been ingested by AI models. The proposed amendment would allow companies and artists “to hold AI accountable for the mass theft of creative works that continues to take place,” the si...

CEO Bryan Bockman told BI about AimLock's work in the counter-UAS space at SOF Week 2025. Helping troops armed with rifles, drones , mounted machine guns, and even grenade and rocket launchers identify and lock onto targets more easily — that's the basic mission of US company AimLock, which has been developing automated targeting products for over a decade. At SOF Week 2025, the company's CEO, Bryan Bockmon, told Business Insider about how the company is now focusing on autonomous weapons systems that may be crucial for future warfare, systems made for defeating drones. Almost Half of Tesla Owners Say Their Cars Have Been Damaged Intentionally

Image
Tesla owners confirm they are being targeted, most often in the south Tesla vehicles have become lightning rods for people’s disdain for CEO Elon Musk, with many simply mocking or ridiculing drivers. A new report suggests some are taking it a step further; almost half of the respondents say their vehicles have been “intentionally damaged,” with a bulk of the reports coming from the south. Further, almost three-quarters of Tesla drivers feel they’re at risk of being targeted in the future. Guardian Service also reports that over half of Tesla owners say their insurance premiums have risen, whether their vehicle was damaged or not. Though many remain happy with their Teslas, 19 percent are now rethinking their decision to buy a Tesla instead of the myriad other electrified options from other automakers. Tesla damage, by the numbers Though Tesla stock has continued to climb steadily over the past few months, this study suggests onlookers are still displeased with Elo...

Bill Gates is giving away 99% of his money. You can bet your heirs have noticed.

Image
Gates’s announcement is a springboard to consider the value of giving away more money now, not later. Posting on his blog last Thursday, Bill Gates shocked the philanthropic world with a stunning announcement: the Microsoft co-founder will accelerate his plans to give away almost all of his wealth over the next 20 years. He vowed to reduce his net worth (currently estimated at roughly $168 billion) by 99%, donating it all through his Gates Foundation. In 20 years, the foundation will shut down. Read: Here’s how much of his fortune Bill Gates will leave to his kids — but who gets the $130 million Washington estate? While most of us might admire Gates’s intent to use his money to tackle urgent problems now and not “die rich,” the news may resonate even more with the wealthiest Americans. Many of them have set up charitable foundations, built on vast fortunes, that are designed to outlive them. “Bill Gates is saying he can make more of ...

US company stuns industry with breakthrough achievement in homegrown battery supply: 'A game-changer'

Image
An advanced materials company in the United States has announced a cutting-edge development that may change the way batteries are made in the country. Founded in 2015, Lyten has become one of the leading companies in lithium-sulfur battery technology . In an April news release , the company revealed that it had helped secure its battery supply chain by manufacturing its own battery grade lithium-metal alloys and foils in the U.S. According to Lyten, the development "eliminates the need for foreign-sourced critical minerals, making it a locally sourced, locally manufactured, tariff-free alternative to lithium-ion batteries." Lithium-sulfur batteries have shown the potential to offer higher energy density and lower production costs compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries, which are considered the most popular battery in the world. Since the Trump administration announced a wave of tariffs that are impacting numer...

Objective pain score? Here's the problem with that

Image
Are you in pain? Are you sure? On a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 is no pain at all and 10 is the worst pain imaginable, how much pain is it? Invitations to rate your pain on some arbitrary scale of numerals, or on a display of smiley faces that range from happy to sad (if you're a child), remain the standard ways of assessing people's pain. If a doctor wants to know how much pain their patient is in, that's how they'll try to find out. And they do this for good reason: no one knows a person's pain better than the person whose pain it is. And yet, ratings like these have their limitations. After all, people interpret their pains differently. Some make much of very little, giving high ratings to fairly light pains, while others make little of very much, giving low ratings to pretty bad pains. When a patient rates their pain a five out of ten, who's to say how much pain that five actually stands for (other than the patient)? Luckily, we are promised that...
