Environmental lawyers ‘heartened’ by another EU Court ruling backing bans on bottom trawling

A ban on deep-sea fishing in parts of the Atlantic rich with marine life has been upheld by the EU’s General Court. It means these areas will remain restricted to help preserve vulnerable species and ecosystems. The decision comes after the same court ruled last month in a German case that Marine Protected Areas must be protected from bottom trawling. Separate legal actions were filed by the Spanish government and fishermen from Galicia and Asturias who challenged a 2016 EU rule that banned fishing with nets and longlines in 87 areas of the Atlantic off the coasts of Spain, Ireland, Portugal and France. Soundwave recycling technology turns 'forever chemicals' into renewable resources

Image
A new technique that uses soundwaves to separate materials for recycling could help prevent potentially harmful chemicals leaching into the environment. Researchers at the University of Leicester have achieved a major milestone in fuel cell recycling, advancing techniques to efficiently separate valuable catalyst materials and fluorinated polymer membranes (PFAS) from catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs). The articles are published in RSC Sustainability and Ultrasonic Sonochemistry . This development addresses critical environmental challenges posed by PFAS—often referred to as "forever chemicals"—which are known to contaminate drinking water and have serious health implications. The Royal Society of Chemistry has urged government intervention to reduce PFAS levels in UK water supplies. Fuel cells and water electrolyzers, essential components of hydrogen-powered energy systems, powering cars, trains and buses, depend on CCMs contai...

Homa Bay group’s unique organic fertiliser solution to farmers

This planting season, numerous farmers across the region are bustling about trying to secure inputs that promise optimal crop yield. However, agriculture confronts myriad obstacles; thus, there’s no assurance that purportedly reliable products available now truly deliver effective outcomes. Last year saw fraudulent transactions involving substandard fertilizer supplies, leaving some farmers victimized by counterfeit goods. An innovative approach addressing these issues could be through adopting organic farming methods. Environmental experts based out of Homa Bay County spearheaded an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable agronomy. This venture focuses primarily on manufacturing local organic fertilizers, thereby mitigating reliance on potentially harmful chemical alternatives. Kibmist Enterprises Limited utilizes vermiculture techniques—specifically employing worm-driven processes—to generate eco-friendly liquid organic fertilizers known as "vermi-liquids." These solution...

Punjab's Thermal Vision: Revolutionizing Forest Surveillance

The Punjab administration has implemented thermal imaging technology for satellites to monitor the province’s woodlands, which represents a significant advancement in preventing unauthorized tree cutting and forest fires. The Punjab region has become the first province to implement this cutting-edge system, which is currently functioning in the woodlands of Murree and Rawalpindi. This technology allows for immediate identification of forest fires, unlawful logging, and other unapproved actions via continuous satellite images and thermal variance assessment. A group of AI experts will manage its deployment, guaranteeing effective surveillance and swift reaction times. Not only does the system swiftly identify threats, but it also analyzes data to produce comprehensive reports, ensuring Punjab adheres to international environmental benchmarks. Its uses go beyond just protecting forests; they encompass agriculture, animal husbandry, and fishery sectors as well...
