Ethiopia Leads Africa in Green Transportation: Setting the Standard

Addis Ababa, April 4, 2025 (ENA) — Ethiopia is becoming a frontrunner in Africa’s eco-friendly transport industry thanks to robust governmental programs designed to enhance local electric vehicle manufacturing.

State Minister of Transport and Logistics, Bereo Hassan, expressed the nation's commitment to both immediate and long-term EV development strategies.

The state minister noted that efforts are positioning Ethiopia as a leading model for green transportation in Africa, with a focus on meeting local transportation demands through the assembly of tailored electric vehicles.

During an interview with ENA, the state minister revealed that the government is actively encouraging the nationwide uptake of electric vehicles (EVs), focusing particularly on shifting away from fuel-dependent transport methods.

He additionally highlighted the development of Ethiopia’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network, ensuring its steady and expedited advancement.

Ethiopia has launched a comprehensive short and long term strategy to domestically manufacture electric vehicles, with significant activities already in progress.

The country's natural resources, which hold the potential for local EV battery production, he said, the government is developing a long-term plan to leverage these resources and establish Ethiopia as a leading EV battery manufacturer.

He further mentioned that the government is proactively pursuing partnerships and investments from global bodies to encourage innovation and build expertise within the electric vehicle industry.

Ethiopia reinforced its dedication to sustainable mobility by recently welcoming more than 700 global entities, including international bodies, exporters, and key figures, to the International Conference on Green Transport.
