Continental's Revolutionary 'Activated Sound' Tech: Speakers Transform into Displays!

For the first time in the automotive sector, Continental has introduced an "Integrated Acoustic Display." This cutting-edge device combines speakers with vehicle screens, enabling voice responses, directions, and additional audio information to be produced right from the screen itself—without needing extra speakers. An actuator attached at the back of the display panel triggers these sounds through vibration of the glass surface, thus enhancing the overall user interaction significantly.

People can instinctively determine the source of sounds in 3D space, causing them to automatically pivot their head towards the sound. This trait offers a significant benefit for automotive tech. When audio material such as vocal responses or directions are played, drivers might unconsciously focus their attention directly on the display screen.

Additionally, the display surface functions effectively as a soundbox due to its distinctive design and materials. This configuration enhances several elements like internal damping, material rigidity, and the mass of the vibrating surface, resulting in superior acoustics. Continental’s “activated sound” tech boasts multiple benefits. Its compact form fits within mere millimeters inside the display module, minimizing spatial requirements. By assuming the duties typically handled by conventional speakers' soundboards, this system decreases both quantity and size, cutting down production times and expenses during vehicle assembly processes.

The strength of this technology is that it can be mounted on almost all flat parts inside the vehicle as well as the display. If additional actuators are installed in door trim, headrest, A pillar or roof lining, an audio system that vibrates the surface and outputs sound without a separate speaker may be built. In addition, it occupies up to 90% less space than conventional speakers and can reduce its weight by up to 40kg, providing a great advantage in terms of weight reduction.

"Pavel Prouza, who serves on the management board of Continental Automotive Group and leads the UX’s business unit, stated that integrating actuators into the display has enabled superior audio performance within vehicles by treating the whole screen area as a resonating chamber,” he explained. “This approach optimizes cabin space usage and decreases overall vehicle weight when contrasted with traditional speaker systems.” He added, “To enhance user experience, we leveraged Continental’s proficiency in system integration to merge both visual and acoustic elements seamlessly, ensuring top-tier quality remains intact throughout this process.”
