FG Plans to Generate 1 Million Tech Jobs – Minister
The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has announced that the federal government aims to create approximately one million tech positions for Nigeria’s young population.
Tijani made this statement during the official inauguration of a solar-powered community ICT center constructed by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in Abeokuta. This event was part of the activities celebrating the 38th Lisabi festival.
The minister highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s government's dedication to investing in the digital sector, aiming for broad-based economic expansion and supporting the nation’s large young demographic.
When I assumed my position, the president explicitly stated that significant efforts and resources would be dedicated to generating one million tech positions. Therefore, anyone keeping up with global developments can observe that a future devoid of technological advancements does not exist.
There is a significant global shortfall in the tech workforce, and many developed nations with aging populations aren’t producing enough new generations. However, Nigeria’s median age stands at 16.9 years, indicating that their youth will likely become the backbone of the future labor force—not just for Nigeria but potentially beyond as well.
This particular center is just one among numerous others. Over the coming two months, we plan to launch around 30 centers across the nation. We aim to make this center lively and dedicate resources to offering various courses for young individuals who wish to attend.
"We will make sure to link individuals with available job opportunities. For those interested, they can join the three million Technical Talent Program that has already been initiated within the nation," he stated.
He thus urged the young person to stay focused and not lose heart, mentioning that there are abundant job openings in technology since the demand for workers in this field exceeds supply globally.
"If someone working in tech is asked, the starting salary ranges from ₦350,000 to ₦500,000. The field of technology offers substantial rewards, hence rather than focusing on challenges, individuals should leverage resources such as these centers, equip themselves with knowledge, and seize the global opportunities presented to them," he concluded.
Earlier, Oba Adedotun Are, the Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, praised President Tinubu for endorsing the establishment of the center in Abeokuta. He stated that this decision undoubtedly heralds a fresh start for the residents of Egbaland, promising accelerated progress, development, and increased economic opportunities for the community members.
