Hanoi University Targets Top 100 in Engineering and Technology Among Asian Universities

The Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) aims to be among the top 100 institutions in Asia by 2045, as per a plan that has been endorsed by Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long.

As part of this initiative, HUST will transform into a contemporary institute of higher learning, positioning itself amongst the premier institutions across Asia within the domains of engineering and technology. The objective is to establish it as a center dedicated to cultivating expertise, fostering research, and driving innovations. This would enable it to take a pivotal position in Vietnam’s educational framework, particularly in sectors crucial for advancing key technological developments and industrial growth including AI, cyber security, blockchain, electronics, semiconductor manufacturing, digital tech, robotics, automation systems, renewable energies, environmental science, bioengineering, and cutting-edge material sciences. Anticipated outcomes include significant contributions towards socioeconomic progress not only in Hanoi but also throughout the broader Red River Delta area and indeed all over Vietnam.

According to the plan, by 2030, 85% of its faculty members should possess doctorates, with 30% holding positions as professors or associate professors and another 10% being distinguished international educators and researchers. Additionally, at least 25% of educational programs must be conducted in English. The initiative seeks to produce a minimum of 8,000 graduates—engineers, master's degree recipients, and Ph.D.s—in disciplines crucial for advancing key technologies and sectors. The strategy further includes achieving an annual output from academics averaging one publication every seven months in both Web of Science and Scopus journals, securing between 25 and 30 recognized intellectual properties yearly such as patents and utility models, ranking four to six academic programs among the world’s top 300-500 institutions, and ensuring at least six innovations resulting from university-led research enter successful market applications.

The aim is to nurture at least 10 spin-off and startup firms with aggregated mobilized capital exceeding US$10 million.

By 2035, the HUST aims to rank within the top 100 to 150 universities across Asia as per respected global rankings, with aspirations to advance into the top 100 by 2045.

As part of the recently approved initiative, additional funding must be secured to enhance the university’s growth and bolster its facilities. This includes establishing a new campus in nearby Hung Yen Province as well as modernizing laboratories located in Hanoi.

An innovation center for HUST will be established and cultivated as an integral part of Hanoi’s ecosystem.

In the 2025 QS Asia University Rankings (QS AUR 2025), the Hanoi University of Science and Technology ranks 388th.

The QS rankings rely on an extensive evaluation of 11 metrics such as academic standing, employer reviews, teacher-to-student ratios, citation counts per publication, and global faculty presence. In the 2025 iteration, which assessed 984 tertiary educational institutions across Asia, 142 were new entries. Notably, seventeen higher education institutions from Vietnam appeared in theQS Asia University rankings.
