Nintendo Delays Switch 2 Pre-Orders in U.S. Due to Trump Tariffs

The launch of the highly anticipated gaming console is likely to be affected by heavy duties on products made in Vietnam and Cambodia

Nintendo on Friday said it was delaying pre-orders of its hotly anticipated Switch 2 gaming console as it assesses the fallout from the Trump administration's trade tariffs.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the US will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions," the company said, adding that the launch date of June 5 remains unchanged.

On Wednesday, the renowned Japanese gaming company unveiled specifics regarding the Switch 2, revealing an upgrade to the immensely popular 2017 version which has seen sales surpassing 150 million units.

But shares in the Kyoto-based company tanked in the days following the announcement, partly because the recommended retail price - US$449.99 in the United States - is at least a third more than its predecessor.

Nintendo's stock was also hit following US President Donald Trump's extensive tariffs.

This includes 46 percent for Vietnam and 49 percent for Cambodia — nations whereNintendo is said to have redirected a larger portion of its manufacturing recently.

On Friday, Trump stated that Vietnam's senior-most leader informed him during a "highly effective" telephone conversation that they wished to negotiate an agreement regarding tariffs.

The initial Switch garnered appeal across all age groups due to its innovative design, enabling users to carry it around easily and also link up with a TV for gaming sessions.
