Zimbabwe's Tycoon to Build Africa's Premier AI Manufacturing Plant
Addis Ababa, April 4, 2025 (ENA)— Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa’s Cassava Technologies has announced an exciting partnership with Nvidia to build Africa’s first artificial intelligence (AI) factory in South Africa.
This innovative initiative will transcend being merely another data center; it is tailored explicitly for powering AI computations.
This project, working alongside the leading AI computing company Nvidia, seeks to speed up Africa’s journey towards digital transformation.
Scheduled to commence operations by June 2025, this facility will incorporate NVIDIA’s cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies. The plan includes expanding into Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria; however, specific expansion timelines have not yet been disclosed. Nonetheless, the initiative aims to make significant strides towards bringing AI more closely to the African continent.
The AI facility will utilize Nvidia supercomputers equipped with GPUs (graphics processing units) to provide AI services throughout the region.
The facility will similarly gain advantages from a comprehensive fiber-optic infrastructure along with power-saving data centers.
The Zimbabwean billionaire characterized this initiative as an essential move for Africa's role in the worldwide AI economy.
The facility intends to provide advanced technology to local enterprises, emerging companies, and investigators, thereby bolstering the continent's position in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
What’s an AI Factory?
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang describes an AI factory as a dedicated space engineered for overseeing the entire lifecycle of artificial intelligence, from handling initial raw data all the way through to generating fully trained AI models.
Chinasa Okolo, a technology innovation fellow at the Brookings Institution, highlighted that these facilities integrate all crucial components of AI development—including data pipelines, algorithm creation, and model testing—into a single cohesive system. This integration enhances efficiency and accessibility in AI development.
